Garden With a View

Project description The garden reflects the style and character of the property which as a large barn style house is contemporary at the rear but more traditional to the front. The garden follows this concept in being a blend of traditional and modern.

Design brief The garden enjoys fantastic views out into the landscape and part of the brief was to use the sense of space and light to create a garden that would sit comfortably within the surrounding area but also which had its own character and identity.

The garden was not very deep so a series of linked circles set at an angle was used to help create an illusion of greater depth. The layout was based on geometric shapes with simple, bold lines. Sweeping paths link different areas of the garden to encourage wandering and lush planting softens the disciplined layout.

The owner is passionate about plants and these had to take centre stage in the garden. The borders were lushly planted in a riot of assorted colours using lots of perennials together with shrubs to provide a more permanent structure. Plants spill out over paths, climbers twine through each other with foliage, flower and scent all playing a crucial role.

A curved path in crushed stone sweeps around one of the circular lawns to a seating area. The seating pods reflect part of the architectural detail of the house.
