Contemporary Formal Garden
Project description This large garden was created as a modern space that can be viewed from the house with areas to relax and entertain at different times of the day. The front and rear gardens follow the same concept to provide a visual link between them.
Design brief The brief for this garden was to create a contemporary garden with a formal style using a simple but striking layout. The garden is large and the owners wanted to build on this to create a feeling of space, light and depth. Different areas were required for relaxing, eating and socialising and the garden required lighting so that it could be enjoyed and used at after dark. The design for the rear garden needed to be extended into the front so that the two spaces work as once overall space. The planting needed to create height in the garden without being overpowering, whilst also adding to the contemporary style aimed for.
Outline Plan showing the proposed layout for the new garden. The design comprises a series of square lawns surrounded by pale crushed stone paths. Areas of pale grey paving provide spaces to relax and entertain. The planting is a contrast of formal specimens and looser drifts of low planting.
A series of square lawns extend the length of the garden. Bespoke trellis panels ‘float’ above the stone walls to screen out the rear of the neighbouring fences.
Paved dining area enclosed by low box hedges and four raised beds planted with clipped Hornbeam trees. Recessed lights throw a wash of light across the paving.
The front garden planting is in shades of blue, purple and silver enclosed by low box hedging.
The square central lawn is edged with a path in pale grey stone together with a centre square of loose white cobbles.
The planting at the front of the garden includes a row of lollipop bay trees above the more informal planting below.
